Cat L. Hurt-Her
What's your favorite thing about roller derby?
Hitting, definitely hitting. And knee socks. These are a few of my favorite things. I also really enjoy the opportunity to be active and aggressive. Gaining a new family of derby sisters is also a plus. I've finally found a place where I feel normal!
What's the story behind your derby name?
I am a farm girl through and through; both of my name and number refer to that. I had originally toyed with the idea of making my derby persona a kind of tribute to Chris Farley and the fact that I'm just an oddball, but humor was not the reason I got into derby. Ever since I left the farm, I had been looking to find some way to feel strong again and I finally managed to do that through derby. I grew up hip checking calves, taking a hit from a derby girl is nothing compared to getting tossed over a gate by an angry bull. Blocking reminds me of herding cows and heifers, although it is a bit strange to be holding someone behind me rather than face her. It's a lot safer to turn your back to a derby girl than a large animal, I guess.
What do you do to get in touch with your softer side?
Um... do I have a softer side? I guess I do. I am a bit of a Muppet fanatic, so a Kermit the Frog fix usually mellows me out. I'm in the process of learning to play "The Rainbow Connection" on my guitar. And when I play, I tend to rock out to country and bluegrass rather than death metal, so I guess that is a "softer" side. I do love a good murder ballad though.
